Raja Riaz, the opposition leader in National Assembly, exudes confidence in reaching a mutual understanding with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to finalise the appointment of a caretaker prime minister.
As the NA's tenure approaches its culmination on Aug 12, the government members are actively engaged in meetings to discuss the intricacies of an interim set-up.
In the event of a government dissolution before Aug 12, elections would promptly follow within the next 90 days. Alternatively, if the assembly completes its term, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is legally bound to conduct polls within the subsequent 60 days.
Despite the obligatory consultations between the prime minister and opposition leader for selecting candidates for the caretaker government, discussions are yet to commence.
Notably, Riaz recently divulged that a meeting with PM Shehbaz is anticipated by Aug 1.
During an interview with a private TV channel, Riaz affirmed his amicable working relationship with Shehbaz, emphasising their commitment to arriving at a suitable consensus.
Riaz clarified that his stance was not rooted in stubbornness; instead, he expressed his willingness to embrace the premier's proposal if it features an appropriate nominee for the coveted position.
When questioned about the potential timeline for general elections, Riaz asserted that elections might transpire within three months or after a two-year period.
Addressing a pressing concern, Riaz reiterated his opposition to Finance Minister Ishaq Dar being considered as a candidate for the caretaker premier’s role.
The opposition leader cautioned that such a choice might lead to disputed elections and public skepticism, especially considering Dar's affiliation with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Elaborating on his views regarding the election timing, Riaz stressed the significance of timely elections in a democratic setting. He expressed favour for adhering to the nation's economic situation, emphasising the need for a strong and stable country.
In a notable statement, Riaz called for banning the PTI following the aftermath of the contentious events that transpired on May 9.
He cited the party's perceived disrespect to martyrs as a compelling reason for such action.
Despite currently being a member of parliament on a PTI ticket, Riaz divulged his intention to contest the forthcoming elections on a PML-N ticket.
On the topic of potential legal actions against the PTI leaders under Article 6 (high treason) of the Constitution, Riaz expressed a clear stance, asserting that such actions should indeed be taken.
When probed about military trials of civilians, Riaz voiced his opinion, suggesting that those who ventured into the army's territory should face the consequences within the relevant domain.
Finally, Riaz addressed the matter of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi's loyalty to party chief Imran Khan, suggesting that true sincerity towards Imran was scarce, with many purportedly incarcerated or having distanced themselves from the party.
