The recent recommendation by the Sindh Human Rights Commission to form a special committee for the victims of last year’s devastating flood in Thari Mirwah and Faiz Ganj talukas in Khairpur district is a crucial step towards addressing the dire situation faced by these communities. The fact that eight months have passed, and relief efforts are still pending is a deeply troubling testament to the inadequacies in disaster response and rehabilitation in the region.
The formation of the proposed special committee, with representation from various line departments, offers a glimmer of hope for those affected. However, the involvement of credible locals is essential to ensure transparency, efficiency and proper representation of the communities’ needs and concerns. A paramount area of focus for the committee lies in addressing food shortages, as it poses a significant risk to vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children, who are at the mercy of severe malnutrition. The committee must earnestly dedicate its efforts to establishing an efficient and unhindered food supply chain while fostering collaboration with charitable agencies.
Additionally, the provision of essential healthcare facilities like portable clinics, maternity wards and dispensaries across the district is crucial to mitigate health risks and prevent the outbreak of diseases in the aftermath of the flood.
It is strongly recommended that the committee conduct a meticulous risk assessment to identify areas prone to flooding and communities vulnerable to such disasters. The development of comprehensive flood risk maps will serve as crucial guides for evacuation plans, emergency responses and resource allocation. As we approach the upcoming monsoon season, proactive measures can significantly reduce the impact of future disasters and save lives. The plight of those affected cannot be ignored any longer.
