The Punjab government on Monday detained former Punjab chief minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi for one month, challenging the bail granted to him by a local court last week.
Elahi was detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (3MPO) for 30 days. Simultaneously, the government also filed an appeal in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the grant of protective bail to Elahi by a single bench.
The petition said that Elahi was being investigated by the investigation agencies concerned as per the law, requesting the court to set aside the decision of the single-judge bench.
Separately, LHC Justice Ali Baqir Najafi heard Elahi’s petition against the 30-day detention.
Elahi’s lawyer informed the case that the PTI president had been granted bail in all the cases against him.
Therefore, the lawyer said, Elahi’s detention orders were issued on the basis of malice. The lawyer also said that they had applied to the deputy commissioner concerned for the release of his client.
Justice Najafi asked the Punjab government to listen to the lawyer’s request. Later, the judge disposed of the application after the lawyer withdrew it.
