In a heartfelt interview with Humans of Bombay, Uorfi Javed, a popular social media influencer, shared her remarkable journey of resilience, perseverance, and self-acceptance. Uorfi candidly revealed her battle with mental and emotional turmoil, including attempted suicide, and how she found the strength to rise above her struggles and pursue her dreams.
Recalling the difficult circumstances she faced, Uorfi expressed, "My house had become very unbearable. It was too mentally exhausting. Too much torture, like from relatives, family, everything - it became too much to take in that I tried [to commit] suicide also a few times. Then I thought to myself, I can commit suicide at any point in time, let's try to give life a chance."
Determined to turn her life around, Uorfi embarked on a journey of self-discovery and growth. She took on various odd jobs and went to great lengths to support herself. "So I just ran, and I was doing everything that was possible to earn money. I was teaching tuition, working at a call centre. One thing led to another, and I was in Mumbai seeking job opportunities," she explained.
During her time in Mumbai, Uorfi realized that auditions were taking place, which presented her with an opportunity to fulfil her childhood dream of becoming an actor. Undeterred by the challenges she faced, she decided to give auditions a try, fully aware that the path ahead might be uncertain. "I was certain that I could keep finding jobs and give auditions. Whatever happens, happens. Eventually, one thing led to another, and now I've reached here," she shared.
The fashion influencer's journey towards self-acceptance and embracing her individuality also involved navigating societal expectations and stereotypes. Growing up in Lucknow, she confronted restrictions placed on her choices in terms of clothing and self-expression. "I was always bold. I always wanted to be a fashionable actor. Growing up in Lucknow, I did not understand why I was stopped from dressing or being a certain way," she expressed.
Despite facing mental and physical abuse, Uorfi found the strength to break free from those constraints and pursue her dreams. "I was mentally and physically abused and felt dead from inside. I even tried committing suicide, but in that one moment decided to give my life a deserving chance it deserved. I ran away to Delhi when I was just 17," she revealed.
In Delhi, Uorfi started taking tuitions and worked at a call centre to support herself, determined to create a better life. Her journey eventually led her to Mumbai, where she encountered new challenges but never lost sight of her dreams. Even though she faced setbacks, such as an early exit from the reality show Bigg Boss OTT, Uorfi remained resilient and continued to pursue her passion. "I would buy clothes in stock or [on] sale and would try to design newer wears off them. I was always into clothes and wearing them the way in which I felt self-accepted and unapologetically myself," said the social media icon.
As Uorfi gained recognition on social media, she encountered criticism and judgment from online trolls regarding her choices and style. However, she chose to rise above the negativity and embrace self-acceptance. "After a brief period of struggle, I cracked a TV serial, and then tried my destiny in Bigg Boss OTT. But I was evicted within a week. With no job in hand, I began experimenting with the things I was best with—clothes! It didn’t sit well with the people. The world trolled me and called my choices rubbish and weird. I was questioned about my morality and character."
However, Uorfi took it all in stride, and marched on forward, only to become the beacon of virality that she is today. "But not caring about faceless people's opinions on the Internet, I kept embracing myself and expressed self-acceptance through my choice," she said.
Uorfi's inspiring story serves as a reminder that despite the challenges one may face, resilience and self-belief can lead to personal growth and success. Her journey from struggling to finding her voice and authenticity resonates with many individuals who have faced similar obstacles and encourages them to stay true to themselves.
