The widely acclaimed and beloved Netflix series Sex Education is set to come to an end with its upcoming fourth season, which is scheduled to premiere on September 21. As fans eagerly anticipate the final instalment, Netflix has released the first teaser trailer, hinting at what lies ahead.
The official description for Season 4 unveils a new chapter for the characters as they navigate their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College after Moordale Secondary's closure. Otis faces the challenge of establishing his new clinic, while Eric hopes to avoid the label of "loser" once again. The progressive ideals that the Moordale students cherished are put to the test in the face of Cavendish's unique culture. The college embraces student-led initiatives, non-competitive approaches, daily yoga in the communal garden, and an emphasis on kindness.
The narrative also explores the experiences of other characters, including Viv, Jackson, Aimee, and Adam, and delves into Maeve's life at Wallace University in the United States.
Series creator, lead writer, and executive producer Laurie Nunn expressed her gratitude to the show's dedicated fanbase in a heartfelt letter. “We wanted to make a show that would answer some of the questions we all used to have about love, sex, friendship, and our bodies. Something that would have helped our inner teenagers feel a little less alone. It's been overwhelming seeing how the show has connected with people around the world, and we hope it's made some of you feel a little less alone too,” the letter read.
Nunn further stated, “We've decided the fourth season will also be the final instalment of our show. This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate." She remarked on the journey from the show's inception in 2017, when the writer’s room was situated above a sex shop, to the immense impact it has had worldwide. The series aimed to address the questions and insecurities surrounding love, sex, friendship, and self-discovery during the tumultuous years of adolescence.
However, while bidding farewell is undeniably difficult, Nunn revealed that the decision to end the series with the fourth season was made as the themes and stories naturally converged towards a conclusion. The departure of several cast members further substantiated the decision to conclude Sex Education with its fourth season. Simone Ashley, Tanya Reynolds, and Patricia Allison, who portrayed Olivia, Lily, and Ola, respectively, confirmed that they would not be returning.
Additionally, Ncuti Gatwa, acclaimed for his portrayal of Eric Effiong, will take on the title role in the iconic British series Doctor Who. Despite these changes, Gatwa will still make appearances in the fourth season of Sex Education. On the other hand, Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Aimee-Lou Wood, Emma Mackey, and Connor Swindells, among others, are set to reprise their roles. Joining the cast for the final season are Dan Levy, Thaddea Graham, Lisa McGrillis, Marie Reuther, Jodie Turner-Smith, Eshaan Akbar, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, Reda Elazouar, Bella Maclean, and Imani Yahshua.
