Country to receive scattered pre-monsoon rainfall from today

Pre-monsoon rain will likely offer respite from heat spell, says Sherry Rehman, advising citizens to exercise caution

The country is likely to receive scattered pre-monsoon rain beginning today, which is expected to offer citizens respite from the ongoing heat spell.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), scattered rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to persist throughout the week till June 30 in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat and other cities in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), Punjab regions.

Similarly, rain may lash Sindh, Balochistan and Southern Punjab from June 26 to June 29.

As per PMD advisory, Pre-Monsoon Rains are forecast from 25th to 30th June, leading to the subsiding of the prevailing heat wave. Sharing PMD’s advisory on Twitter, Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman wrote that heavy rain may cause urban flooding and trigger landslides in mountainous areas such as Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, G-B and K-P.

Flash floods are also feared in DG Khan and adjoining areas of North East Balochistan on June 27.

The minister directed all relevant departments to remain alert and advised tourists to exercise caution.

“Citizens are requested to stay away from weak infrastructure, power poles, and watercourses during strong winds and rains to avoid any untoward incidents. Thank you,” tweeted Rehman.
