People defy cyclone warning, ignore beach ban

Police, Rescue teams work tirelessly to prevent thrill seekers from going near waves

In blatant disregard of the ban on beach activities, citizens in Karachi continued to flock to Seaview and Do Darya beaches for the fourth consecutive day.

Despite the presence of law enforcement, individuals, including both youths and families, were undeterred in their quest to enjoy the sea. Meanwhile, rescue teams worked tirelessly to prevent any potential mishap.

The alarming level of irresponsibility displayed by citizens gathering at the beach during the cyclone is cause for concern. The Seaview Beach witnessed instances of confusion and conflicts between the police and the public, with verbal duels often erupting.

As the storm brought strong winds, the city experienced 14-foot high waves crashing against the shore, accompanied by intermittent light and heavy rains across various areas.

Hundreds of people delighted in observing the stormy sea and its powerful waves. Fauzia, a resident of Landhi at Seaview, shared her perspective, emphasising that immediate danger was absent. She explained that families, including children, flocked to the beach to experience the cold winds, falling spray from the sky, and the foaming sea.

Fauzia acknowledged the presence of police and rescue teams, noting that enforcement of Section 144 prevented most people from approaching the sea.

Nevertheless, she said that the vacation period for children prompted families to seize the opportunity and witness the sea's adventurous nature. In contrast, the staff of Sindh Rescue Service and 1112 expressed deep concern and frustration.

Overwhelmed by the situation, their teams were stationed along the city's coastlines to address any emergencies. However, people continued to disregard their appeals. Police vehicles maintained a constant presence, patrolling the area and repeatedly urging citizens to prioritise their safety and refrain from risking their lives on the coastline for the remainder of the week.

Despite the ongoing severe weather conditions, individuals persisted in taking selfies near the sea, closely monitored by armed policemen.
