Saba Qamar's latest offering Jins, is derived from the Urdu word for gender. Much like the crises of an individual stuck between binaries, Jins is a mesmerising piece of poetry that delves into the tragic emotional landscape between two opposing spectrums. This production, brought to life at Lahore's prestigious National College of Arts (NCA) Auditorium, is dedicated to the rich heritage of Urdu literature. Under the direction of Shiraz Malik and produced by the talented Saba Qamar, Jins offers a complex dialogue on gender dynamics.

Written and performed by Muhammad Bilal Awan, with the talented Saba, Jins showcases the former's profound talent and poetic sensibilities. The carefully crafted verses navigate the larger narrative of oppression faced by both genders. Through a simple poem and a conversation-like enactment, Bilal, alongside Saba, creates an enchanting experience.

In Jins, Saba's portrayal of the unnamed, yet assertive woman is striking. Clad in an all-white saree, her every movement accentuated by a large silver hairpiece, she embodies the seductive and sensual aspects associated with femininity, as perceived through the male gaze.

However, her character also exudes power and agency, challenging societal norms and engaging in thought-provoking dialogue. The choice of silver jewellery wrapped firmly around her forearms cannot just be a coincidence. Resembling the chains that shackle even powerful women, it is clear that a lot of thought was put into Saba's persona in the offering.

Bilal, playing the role of the unnamed man, brings forth the toxic aspects of masculinity alongside their underlying reasoning. This is not to say that the art piece is a justification for the wrongs exacted by either gender. Rather, one could interpret the piece as a takedown of the patriarchal status quo that pits men and women against each other.

There is a distinct highlighting of the privilege offered to men by the status quo, alongside what it costs men to adhere to a structure that benefits them. Bilal mourns the manner in which all these benefits cost men their emotions, while also being cognisant of the detrimental impact on women. Through his performance, he sheds light on the complexities and contradictions often associated with gender roles and expectations.

The fact that the two characters are unnamed offers a sense of universality to the short video. It is the story of every man and woman - an intimate back and forth that is seldom possible, yet all too pertinent.

Jins is a triumph of artistic expression and storytelling. It masterfully navigates the complexities of gender dynamics, shedding light on the shared experiences of oppression faced by both genders. This production is a testament to the power of poetry and performance, offering a profound and captivating experience for all who have the opportunity to witness it.
