KARACHI:

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has named Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab and Kashif Shoro for the mayor’s role in the metropolitan cities of Karachi and Hyderabad, the party announced on Monday.

The decision was announced at a press conference by PPP Sindh President Nisar Khoro, who also revealed the names of the party’s nominees for mayoral positions in various other cities of the province.

Khoro confirmed the selection of Murtaza Wahab as the party’s candidate for Karachi's mayor, Kashif Shoro for Hyderabad, and Arsalan Sheikh for the mayor of Sukkur.

Salman Abdullah Murad has been nominated for the Deputy Mayor of Karachi, he said.

Following the announcement, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated the nominees on Twitter, expressing his hope that they would be the first in a long line of PPP mayors in Karachi and Hyderabad.

“Congratulations to all PPP nominees for Chairman, dep chairman, mayor, dep mayor and towns. The people have expressed faith in the ppp. Now let’s go win the next round and get going with with what we do best, serving the people,” he wrote in his tweet.

Bilawal instructed all nominees that the time has come to fulfill the trust of the people and to succeed in the next phase.

“A special thank you to Hyderabad & Karachi for trusting us for the first time. I have full faith that Mr. Shoro & Mr. Wahab will be the first but not the last PPP mayors of our two great cities,” he added.

It is noteworthy that the mayoral election in Karachi will take place on June 15 at the KMC Building.

The Jamaat-e-Islami has nominated Hafiz Naeemur Rehman for the position, who has the backing of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

After his nomination as Karachi's mayor, Murtaza Wahab expressed his gratitude to Bilawal Bhutto, Asif Zardari, and Faryal Talpur. In his inaugural statement, he pledged to fulfill the duties entrusted to him by his party.

“I am a Karachiite — the city is in my veins & nothing would be of greater honour for me but to work for the betterment of our great city. I pledge to deliver to the best of my abilities and take the entire city forward, working with all stakeholders, political and administrative,” he wrote on Twitter.

In his response to the nomination, Kashif Shoro also expressed his gratitude, saying, "I am incredibly grateful for the responsibility entrusted to me as the Mayor of Hyderabad. I will strive to fulfil my responsibilities and meet the expectations of the people in my city. I am committed to serving with fervour and enthusiasm."
