On national TV: Imran Abbas advises Sanam Jung to 'lose 10 kg'

Body weight cannot be a basis for any kind of judgment or ridicule

Entertainment Desk June 01, 2023

A recent exchange on a morning show between actors Imran Abbas and Sanam Jung has ignited a discussion about body image and the dynamics of friendship. Abbas's comment, though made in a lighthearted manner, raises concerns about fat shaming and the importance of maintaining respectful behaviour, even among close friends.

Abbas joined the morning show via a call, and Jung already seemed flustered at the idea of conversing with her friend on national television in this manner. When asked by the host, Madeha Naqvi, about advice for Jung, Abbas stated, "When you come back from America, lose 10 kg and return." The host and Jung laughed it off, but Naqvi's stunned expression lingered on the camera as Jung continued to laugh.

Abbas, however, carries forth and goes on to praise his friend. "I always tell [Jung] that she lives in her own world. She doesn't care, she does what she pleases. She chooses projects on her, she chooses commercials on her own. Even though she has so many offers."

The actor then detailed how Jung has called him at 2 AM, running offers by him, and even when he believes the compensation is too high, he is shocked to see that she often secures that amount, sometimes even surpassing the original quote.

When he complained that Jung does not listen to him, she states, "Since I started working with [Abbas], he's so particular about his food, gym. He's a very disciplined person. When I ask him how he makes time, he says that he comes to the same shoot I do, but he makes time. 'What is your problem?' he asks." Jung continued to joke about how she remains in awe of his discipline.

Jung, a talented actor, television host, and model, has made significant contributions to the entertainment industry. While accolades do not dictate one's worth, it is pertinent to note that all these accomplishments cannot be overshadowed by what the weighing scale reads for the star. Abbas, a highly accomplished actor, model, and singer who has also worked globally, must know and do better in terms of comments passed on national television.

While the comment might have been intended as a joke, it drew attention to the prevalence of body shaming in society. Fat shaming, in particular, perpetuates negative body image and can have harmful psychological and emotional effects on individuals. It is important to recognise that body weight cannot be a basis for any kind of judgment or ridicule.
