Two policemen were killed and two others sustained critical injuries when a hand grenade accidently exploded at Levies Centre in Khyber tribal district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) late on Thursday. Police told The Express Tribune that senior deputy superintendent of police (SDPO) Nawaz Khan and other officials including assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Barkatullah, Constable Islam Gul and Shah Mehmood were inspecting a police bunker when all of a sudden a hand grenade exploded. “The hand grenade of a constable went off accidently when he removed the pin by mistake,” said an official of police.
Two constables identified as Islam Gul and Shah Mehmood died on the spot while SDPO Nawaz Khan and Barkatullah sustained serious wounds. The injured policemen were rushed to Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) where their condition is stated to be stable after treatment. Later, funeral prayers of the two slain constables were offered at police lines with full guard of honour. Inspector General Police (IGP) K-P Akhtar Hayat Gandapur, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Said Ishfaq Anwar, DPO Khyber Saleem Abbas Kalachi, Deputy Commissioner Khyber Abdul Nasir, Assistant Commissioner Bara Shahabuddin, police and civil officers and traders attended the prayers.
On the other hand, unidentified armed men gunned down a local resident Rahid Khan in the Malikdinkhel area of Bara tehsil. Police registered an FIR in the case and launched an investigation. Two people were killed in the Baitani area of Lakki Marwat district on Friday.
