Army chief denounces May 9 mayhem as ‘intolerable’

Gen Asim vows to take firm action against those who are responsible for such acts

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir has expressed deep sadness over the recent spate of attacks on military installations, memorials, and sanctuaries of martyrs, denouncing them as “intolerable”.

“Firm action will be taken against those who are responsible for such acts, as the army is committed to safeguarding national security,” Gen Asim said while addressing an award distribution ceremony held at the GHQ aimed to recognise unwavering bravery and outstanding services of martyrs and ghazis to the nation on Monday.

Violent protests were held across the country following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on May 9. Since then, thousands of protesters have been rounded up and reports of trying them in military courts are rife.

The army chief awarded military honours to the brave officers and men of Pakistan Army, military's media wing, the ISPR, said in a statement.

The event, attended by a large number of senior officers of Pakistan Army and the families of martyrs, commemorated the sacrifices made by these individuals in ensuring the country's security and freedom.

The COAS said that a strong army guarantees the security and unity of the country.

“Undoubtedly, we are living in a free atmosphere due to the martyrs' sense of duty and great sacrifices,” the army chief said, expressing deep gratitude and appreciation for the martyrs and veterans and emphasised their vital role in maintaining a free and safe atmosphere in the country.

He said, "The sacrifices of martyrs and services of Ghazis are our valuable asset and capital of pride."

During the ceremony, 51 officers were bestowed with the prestigious Sitara-e-Imtiaz (military) award in recognition of their exceptional contributions.

Additionally, 22 officers and jawans received the Tamgha-e-Basalat decoration for their exemplary dedication, while two jawans were honoured with the United Nations Special Medal.

The army chief highlighted the unity and camaraderie within Pakistan Army, describing it as a proud and exemplary family. "Pakistan Army as an institution [that] always remembers every person associated with it and their families, and our relationship as a family is a proud and exemplary one," Gen Asim stated.

He emphasised the spirit of inclusivity and impartiality within the armed forces, saying: "Every soldier and officer of Pakistan Army puts his duties and responsibilities first, regardless of regional, linguistic, and political prejudices and distinctions.

“A strong army guarantees the security and unity of the country.”

As a gesture of remembrance and respect, the COAS announced the celebration of "Pakistan Martyrs Day" on May 25. This day will serve as a tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defence of the nation.

The award distribution ceremony concluded with a note of gratitude to the martyrs and veterans, recognising their immense contributions and reaffirming Pakistan Army's commitment to upholding the country's security and unity.
