KARACHI:

Former Sindh governor and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Imran Ismail was taken into police custody on Friday afternoon in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase VIII. Later, he was handed over to the East Investigation Police.

SP Investigation East, Tariq Elahi Mastoi, stated that Ismail has been detained in connection with FIR filed at Tipu Sultan police station under the provisions of Anti-terrorism Act (ATA), enticing people against the state institutions and other relevant sections.

Reportedly, on May 9, during a protest against the arrest of Imran Khan, PTI workers, allegedly following orders from PTI leaders, resorted to throwing petrol bombs and setting fire to the police prison van, Rangers checkpoint, and People’s Bus Service on Amber Tower Shahrah-e-Faisal.

The SP said that several vehicles’ windows were smashed. A case was registered against 23 PTI leaders and workers, along with 800 to 1000 unidentified individuals, at the Tipu Sultan police station. The charges include vandalism, arson, interfering with official work, assault, and acts of terrorism.

PTI minority wing head quits party

Another Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader has resigned from the party, saying, "I am leaving PTI with a heavy heart." Jay Prakash, who served as a member of the National Assembly from 2018 to January 2023 and held the position of president of PTI's minority wing, made the announcement at a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club.

During the press conference, Jay Prakash acknowledged that PTI has been a well-organized party dedicated to combating corruption in the country. He commended the party's efforts in distancing itself from corruption and striving to enhance Pakistan's economy.

Addressing a recent incident that occurred on May 9, Jay Prakash condemned the event and called for an investigation into it. He expressed his sadness and announced his decision to resign from PTI while asserting his commitment to continue working for the protection of minority rights.
