Dressed for royalty: What the celebrities wore at Charles III's coronation

Gone are the days when requests were made for attendees to wear grand robes

Choosing the right outfit to wear to any royal event is of utmost significance. But a moment as historically-significant as the coronation of a new monarch requires its guests to go the extra mile.

Britain’s King Charles III has been crowned the nation’s monarch and prayed to be a “blessing” to the people of “every faith and conviction.” Charles is now the 40th reigning sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey, the nation’s coronation church since 1066, as Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby placed St Edward’s crown on his head.

Charles’s coronation marks many departures from tradition for the coronation of a monarch. The same extended to the guest's dress codes. Gone are the days when requests were made for attendees to wear grand robes in favour of a more relaxed, pared down look. While members of the royal family arrived in traditional regalia, celebrities graced the event in suits, ties, overcoats and other formal attires.

British actor and Love Actually star Emma Thompson arrived at the ceremony in a monochrome red rose-printed overcoat from Emilia Wickstead. In honour of the occasion, she accessorized with her Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) medal.

As per CNN, Thompson is known to subvert royal dress codes after she received her MBE award at Buckingham Palace in 2018 in a pair of Stella McCartney for Stan Smith trainers. But she was spotted outside Westminster Abbey this morning in Roger Vivier black satin pumps with a crystal heel and buckle.

Renowned singer Katy Perry, who will headline the coronation concert in Windsor on Sunday, opted for a pink skirt suit and pearl choker by Vivienne Westwood — the late British designer who died in December 2022. Several are wondering whether Perry’s distinctive necklace design may be a nod to Queen Camilla's fashion legacy, considering UK’s Queen consort has numerous three-strand pearl pieces, including the aquamarine piece she has worn consistently since the 1990s.

Australian musician Nick Cave was also spotted looking dapper in a classic three-piece black suit and Gucci horsebit loafers.

Not to forget, the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, who now safely qualifies as a celebrity, entered Westminster Abbey for the coronation of his father, King Charles, and stepmother, Queen Camilla, in a morning suit. He smiled as he walked in with his cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and their husbands, reported PEOPLE.

Prince Harry wore a morning suit for the occasion, following the dress code for most of the congregation. According to the outlet, Harry was requested to wear a morning suit and he didn't make any specific asks regarding his outfit. He also wore his Afghanistan service medal along with the Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee medals, while sporting his KCVO neck decoration and star.
