Fatal road accidents

The recent van-truck collision in Sindh’s Thatta town that claimed nine lives is a tragic reminder of the importance of road safety in Pakistan. Road accidents have become a common occurrence, and just a day before, in a separate incident, six members of a family died while 20 others sustained injuries after a coaster fell into a ditch in Manjhand, also in Sindh. There is a need to address this issue urgently as innocent lives are at stake.

One of the major causes of road accidents in Pakistan is reckless driving. Drivers often ignore traffic rules and regulations, putting themselves and others at risk. Moreover, poor condition of roads, inadequate streetlights and lack of safety barriers are all contributing factors.

Concerned authorities must work diligently to improve the infrastructure of roads and highways and ensure that traffic rules are strictly enforced. It is also crucial to educate drivers about safe driving practices. Drivers should be trained on how to handle emergencies on the road, such as sudden braking or avoiding collisions. This could be included in the driving licence test.

Furthermore, awareness campaigns should be launched to encourage the use of seat belts and helmets, which can help save lives. Apart from this, the government must ensure that all vehicles on the road are regularly inspected and maintained. Many accidents are caused by faulty brakes, worn-out tires, and other mechanical issues that could be prevented with proper maintenance. Finally, accountability must be the top priority. In many cases, drivers are let off with a small fine or bribe, and this sends the wrong message to others.

The government should establish strict laws and regulations to ensure that those responsible for road accidents are held accountable. This tragic incident should serve as a wake-up call for the authorities. It is high time for the government to take the necessary steps to ensure road safety in Pakistan and work towards developing the transport infrastructure of major cities.
