In an explosive press conference on Sunday, senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Dr Zulfiqar Mirza not only announced his resignation from key posts within the party and the Sindh government, but also made some extraordinary allegations against his old nemesis, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
Dressed in a white shalwar kameez and the traditional Sindhi cap, Mirza arrived at the Karachi Press Club in a large convoy of SUVs along with his guards at around 4:20 pm. He brought a copy of the Holy Quran along with a briefcase filled with ‘documentary evidence’.
A surprise guest
Even though he has resigned, Mirza said no one can take away his association from the PPP. “Even the shroud at my funeral would be the PPP flag,” he stressed.
He said that President Asif Ali Zardari was a friend to him in the past and would continue to be so in the future. He said whenever the time comes, he would be the first to shed his blood for the party.
Mirza recalled his sacrifices for the party and reminded everyone that when Benazir Bhutto’s convoy was attacked on Karsaz Road in 2007, Mirza transferred her from the damaged truck to another vehicle.
“I have no differences with the PPP. In fact, there were never any differences,” he said.
He repeatedly invoked Benazir Bhutto’s name. “Shaheed Rani (the martyr queen) has never bowed before the oppressors and neither will I.” He hoped that PPP co-chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would also never bow before those who commit atrocities against their own people.
When Mirza arrived at the press club, he said that the people of Lyari are residents and owners of Karachi. “I have come here today for them.” At no point, however, did he get drawn into a discussion about the Rangers operation in Lyari, even though his press conference was held a few hours after the operation.
At this point, Zafar Baloch, PPP local leader and senior member of the defunct Peoples Amn Committee (PAC) made a dramatic entrance, limping his way towards Mirza with the help of a crutch. Baloch was injured several weeks ago in a targeted grenade attack and sat to the left of Mirza
Mirza defended Baba Ladla and the PAC, and said blaming all crimes on the defunct committee was propaganda to defame the PPP. Malik said, “For the past many months, some people have been saying that Osama bin Laden has come to town in the apparition of Zulfiqar Mirza, blaming me for the numerous problems facing the city, including violence, water, electricity, and unemployment and extortion rackets.”
Cocaine, the CPLC and crime
Mirza also made a number of allegations against MQM leaders. Referring to the MQM’s Waseem Akhtar and Rauf Siddiqi, Mirza alleged that his predecessor home ministers were supplied two kilogrammes of cocaine by the Artillery Maidan SHO every month. “Before me, police stations were also auctioned,” he alleged.
Speaking about Ajmal Pahari, who is accused of killing over 100 people, Mirza said his interrogation has revealed that the MQM knew about the Ashura blast and that the party had planned an arson attack a day prior to the blast.
He urged the business community and industrialists to stop fearing the MQM. “I will lead you,” he said.
Mirza also targeted the current Citizens Police Liaison Committee chief Ahmed Chinoy and alleged that he was working at the MQM’s behest. “I ask Ahmed Chinoy whether the extortion racket is giving money to Baba Ladla or to your laadli (favourite).”
Paying up for Satish Anand
Mirza also revealed that he spent Rs5 million to aid filmmaker Satish Anand, who was kidnapped by the Taliban. Mirza said that the family was not able to pay the entire ransom amount demanded. “The family paid Rs10 million, while I contributed Rs5 million and this way Sharfuddin Memon (an adviser to the home minister) brought Satish Anand back home.”
Mirza’s future plans: A life of truth?
He said that he made up his mind to quit the government 20 days ago and also met his 87-year-old father to inform him about his decision. “From this day onwards I have dedicated my life in exposing the name of the killers.” However, he hinted that his wife, National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza, would not be following his lead.
Reaction time: ‘Zulfiqar Mirza has repented’
Nationalist parties have supported the former minister’s stance. “Zulfiqar Mirza watched the crimes happen silently for three-and-a-half years and has finally repented,” said Dr Qadir Magsi, president of the Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party.
“We trust every word Mirza spoke because he held the Holy Quran in his hands,” he said.
He wanted President Zardari to take action against the allegations made by Mirza.
Awami Tehreek’s Ayaz Latif Palijo said that “Mirza’s revelations show that the government was well aware of who was doing what.”

Why MQM is silent, and where is their leader Altaf hiding? Which hospital in London?
@kiran
"ur the real son of sindh and Pakistan…!!!"
Why not also of the Sout East Asia, of the World and of the Humanity???
we solute u Mirza on this courageous act!!!! ur the real son of sindh and Pakistan...!!!
This is the problem here..Half the Pakistan will now believe because he held a press conference holding the Holy Book in his hands. No proof would be asked to substantiate his claims. His earlier misgivings and irresponsible utterings would be pardoned. We would also come to believe the Rehman Malik is a Criminal and a terrorist sympathiser but an honourable gentleman and a very good politician.
Now when tomorrow, and most certainly he will, ZM retracts his comments as has been his nature and history, how are we gullible people supposed to react. Wat about the testimony given while holding our beloved QURAN in hands that made us believe in ZM ????
Hats off to Zulfikar Mirza for his courage to speak his mind.
@Tanzeel
"Empty vessels make most noise."
Mirza can not be an empty vessel because he had the the Holy Book in his hand, the Shaheed Rani in his heart and the God Almighty in his head.
We should stop being 'Jahil' and not believe everyone just because he had Holy Quran in his hand. Talibans use Holy Quran to justify their actions, does that mean they give the respect needed to the Holy Book? I dont think so.
Every murderer contests his charges after taking oath on Quran, does that mean he is telling the truth and should be pardoned because he had his hand on the Holy Book? No dear, this world is an ugly place where self preservation overtakes the religious beliefs so ZM just holding the holy book shouldn't act as a reason to believe everything he has said.
Everyone should be investigated and punished for their actions and not just one city and one specific ethnicity!
ppl who dont believed on Mirza words, they also dont believed in QURAN. if u believed in QURAN then believed mirza words...
By the way, has anyone checked if "the qoran" carried by zulfikar mirza in his press conference was in fact a copy of holy qoran? ZM should have opened and shown its pages to newsmen. (you know our politicians are extra clever).
@ Ali , U don't represent the Muhajirs , If you are so sympathetic to Mirza , ask the names of the killers who killed Muhajirs in Lyari and Qasba Colony .
Ugly faces exposed. Wake up dormant nation plz wake up!
Dangerous political stunt and preparation of next elections nothing else. People of Pakistan are emotional and every party including PPP use name of Islam. But reality is that every one is fighting for power including MQM, PPP, ANP and others.
@ali and who gave you the right to represent "muhajir" community and forgive the enemies?
They are all in it together. ("You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours"). They are very good at fooling the people of this lovely country, and they also keep taking money from The U.S of A filling their pockets more and more by the minute and never giving the people basic human rights ever. This has become a practice for our politicians and we would need a miracle to get us out of this mess. All we can do is pray.
Did he just say: Zardari is my friend?
Beep
Sorry Zulfiqar Mirza, you have zero credibility.
We, the muhajirs, forgive you for the insulting remarks against our community after you have shown bravery and exposed the so-called 'owners' of the muhajir community!!
Mr. Zardari must be brought to Justice along with MQM people etc. When he knew that there is a party responsible for supporting the conspiracy of breaking Pakistan then why he did not take action against that. Rather he kept them as his allies in the Govt.
what i think is bothering zulfiqar mirza is why rangers arrested 123 people from lyari thats really made him worry because rangers will interogate those gang war activist and thugs ,i think mr rehman malick is doing a great job here ,keep it up.
These A to Z corrupt politicians are not the primary problem of Pakistan. The basic problem is the questionable thinking mode of Pakistanis. If the thinking mode is fundamentally changed, then these corrupt politicians and the associated miseries shall automatically disappear. They reflect our false consciousness.
Mirza should also read this letter, http://www.defence.pk/forums/general-images-multimedia/55464-benazir-bhuttos-letter-u-s-ambassador-india-1990-a.html
With holding Holy Quran it is true all thing said by Mr. Zulfiqar Mirza but it is about one bad fish but there are many bad fishes in same area Please hold Holy Quran again and say that there all is well including your self
Jiyee Zardari, Jiyee Zulfiqar Mirza.
Why oh why did he react this way? Wasn't he in favor of "impartial" operation? What are they hiding in Lyari?
Empty vessels make most noise. I am sure even this time he ll never be taken seriously and some other event will overshadow his so called press conference. That's how things work in Pakistan. I liked the way Rehman Malik responded him.
Well done Mr Zulfiqar Mirza. you have spoke according to your soul and we appriciate that you have spoken truth. it is the victory of truth . you are above from the dirty politics which is being done on by the name of compromises, the politics of mnafqat. Shahid bibi always stands on high moral grounds and on the principle. she have sacrifies tow times of his Government and thereafter she has sacrifies his life and have not compromised agaisnt the sprit and principle of his party. Founder of the party shahied Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto have sacrifies his life and have never compromised the party lines and the principals. so we proud of you that you have alieves the party lines and speak like Bhutto yours sincelry S.A Awan
Great Work Mirza!!!! Karachi respects you for exposing the terrorists!
"He said whenever the time comes, he would be the first to shed his blood for the party." I can now see the problem facing Pakistan; in the 21st century we still have senior politicians talking about shedding blood for the party. Pakistan is fast becoming the laughing stock of the world!
Mirza has put the ball in MQM's court. Now it is the responsiblity of MQM to defend themselves and if their hands are clean they must prove it.
