ISLAMABAD:

The election commission has finalized the draft of a new law that will allow only voters with a computerized ID card to cast their vote.

Sources said the election commission has forwarded a draft of the Election Laws Amendment Act of 2010 to the Law Ministry.

Under the new law, no one will be allowed to cast a vote on the basis of their passport, driver's licence, educational degree and other documents.

The law ministry has not yet replied to the draft on the computerized ID card. The draft also proposes amendments in the Electoral Rules Act of 1974.

The basic thing is that Election Commission first concentrate to get all the voters in the country regitered. If the first target is achieve than comes CNIC. Before the national election date is announced all political parties in the country make hue and cry to allow their voters to cast their votes as majority of the people have not made CNIC as yet. My argument with the Election Commision is when a Pakistani national cannot open a bank account, make a driving lincense or passport without possessng CNIC than how come people are allowed to cast their votes without making CNIC? If a rule is made in this context it should be strictly followed. The Election Commission should not show any softness at the 11th hour and before few days of holding the elections in the country.
