Pakistan rejects Indian demand of clarity on N-deal

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office Spokesman Abdul Basit said India should not have any concern about Sino-Pak nuclear deal as it is in accordance with international law.

The reaction came on the statement of Indian Premier Manmohan Singh, who said Pakistan should explain its position about Sino-Pak nuclear deal.

Abdul Basit said that Sino-Pak nuclear deal is for peaceful purposes and no country should have any objection. He also said the international community knows Pakistan is facing terrorism and energy crises. He said the nuclear deal with China is crucial to the economic development of Pakistan.

Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had expressed satisfaction over the successful talks between India and Pakistan in Islamabad.

Singh, who reached Toronto for the G20 summit, said Pakistan's approach towards India had improved and New Delhi hopes to sustain the talks.

He added that India will welcome the Most Favoured Nation status by Pakistan but also asked for clarity from Pakistan on its nuclear deal with China.

Singh will be holding talks with his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper. He will sign a bilateral nuclear cooperation pact, similar to the one India has with the US.

Masood Hassan Raja | 14 years ago | Reply Its non of india's nbusiness to dictate us about our needs.Recently New Delhi signed various nuclear agreement with Russia, France,Germany,USA and Canada.It has no right to question Pakistan.Blame goes to India for cross border terrorism in 1971 by invading Pakistan and later nuclearizing South Asia in 1974.Pakistan is always threatened by Indian expensionism. Its nuclear deal with China is purely to handle its crisis in power shortage.Unfortunately India is neither a good neighbor nor a good enemy. An ordinary Pakistani's living standard is higher than ordinary Indians. What Indian Brahmans need is to clean up their socio religious trash of caste system before boosting about their economic prosperity.

Ammad | 14 years ago | Reply @anoop, you should remember that Indian security of its nuclear material is not good, do you remember that nuclear material was found and it had something to do with Delhi University. So how can you give such sensitive technology to a country whose security is so dubious. India's nuclear material could have easily reached terrorists, whereas Pakistan's security is one of the best in the world. Neither US nor India has the right to question or explain the nuclear deal with China. We are a free country and can have a nuclear deal with any country in the world.

Saad Bin Ahmed | 14 years ago | Reply India should not given a free hold in sub-continent. The size of Pakistan is more than enough for Pakistanis so don't need to be worry for Indians. There is an ancient quote "A Small Ant is enough for Big ELEPHANT to make him die". Pakistanis have not any concerns upon so-called economic boost of India. We do not need to compare ourselves with Indians. Because every time it is India to compare themselves with Pakistan. So, we should consider our concerns and let dogs to bark. We need to resolve our issues like Electricity, economic stability. So I am glad that our government has potential to loud her voice without taking any pressure.

Syed A. Mateen | 14 years ago | Reply India is seeking clarification from Pakistan on Sino-Pakistan civilian nuclear deal on the instructions of her maters's voice. Prior to this, US asked People's Republic of China to clarify China-Pakistan nuclear deal. Both the countries are after China and Pakistan to utter a word on this subject and thereafter they are going to play hell on this all around the world. My concern is that had ever Pakistan or China asked US or India about the nuclear deal signed between US and India? If not, then why US and China are poking their nose into our affairs. Pakistan is a free country and can sign any agreement with any government in the world. Neither US nor Idian should bother about what Pakistan is doing.

Anoop | 14 years ago | Reply People are saying since India, a non-signatory to NSG can have the deal why cant it have a similar deal with China. But, they forget that India never gave sensitive nuclear technology to outside powers. Pakistan had a barter system with North Korea for God's sake. How can Pakistan ever be compared to India. On another point. Pakistan is 7 times smaller than India and its economic power 10 smaller than India's,going by the GDP. The question is can Pakistan really absorb such a deal if the nuclear proliferation is not considered. It can barely stay afloat without Aid from Western powers. It'd have been wise if it had asked China to build schools and hospitals and provide a Marshall plan on the lines that Zardari keeps asking US to. No, for Pakistanis parity with India is more important than any rational approach.

Faheem | 14 years ago | Reply US opened the door to deals like China’s by pursuing a deal with India that will provide nuclear materials and technology to a country that is a non-signatory of the NPT and thus outside international inspection requirements. The US and western countries have an egregious record of displaying double standards. China should realise the kind of unipolar world the USA wants, and how detrimental would be the combination of the USA and India in working against its interests, which at present include bringing the nuclear deal with Pakistan to fruition.
