According to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Priyanka Chopra's upcoming spy thriller, Citadel, is being touted as an answer to the James Bond franchise. The show is set to release on Amazon Prime Video on April 28. It stars Chopra alongside Richard Madden, Leslie Manville and Stanley Tucci. In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, the Russo Brothers discussed their love for the Bond franchise and their approach to creating a fresh experience for viewers.
Joe Russo said, "It’s an accurate way to talk about it, without question. I mean, we loved Bond growing up," while Anthony Russo added, "Our job as storytellers isn’t to bring you another version of Bond. Our job as storytellers is to bring you a fresh experience that you are excited and surprised by. So hopefully we hit that mark. We’ll see."
The directors also praised Chopra's physical abilities and her ability to lead the action in the show, stating that her character drives much of the action in the series, with Madden's character playing catch up. Anthony Russo commented, "This is a genre that traditionally has a male lead. And so what was interesting to us was upending that. Priyanka is really gifted physically. She is a badass on camera and she kicks a lot of a** in the show."
In the show, Chopra and Madden play two secret agents who have had their memories erased following a crash years ago. As they work together, they struggle with their attraction to each other while trying to uncover the truth about their pasts.
Citadel is not the only project on Chopra's plate, as she is also set to star in Love Again, an English-language remake of the 2016 German film SMS fur Dich, alongside Sam Heughan and Celine Dion. As audiences eagerly await the release of Citadel, it remains to be seen whether the Russo Brothers have successfully created a fresh take on the spy thriller genre.
