The Sindh police chief decided on Wednesday to send reinforcements to assist law enforcement in the kutcha (riverine) areas and marshlands in the Sukkur and Larkana rangers where bandits have terrorised local population.

Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon chaired the meeting in which it was decided to deploy 500 personnel each of the special unit Rapid Response Force (RRF) in the Sukkur and Larkana ranges.

The IG said that the Central Investigation Agency (CIA) would be responsible for arrest and investigation, including of those involved in kidnapping for ransom cases.

Gangs of bandits routinely hold up travelers and locals, including police personnel, on highways before escaping in the riverine areas where the terrain creates accessibility issues. They have started recording videos of their victims, often in compromising situations, to blackmail them. Their victims include security personnel.

The senior superintendents of police (SSPs) of Ghotki, Kashmore and Shikarpur were instructed to provide a briefing on measures taken to crackdown on such crimes.  Besides Larkana and Sukkur range officers, RRF officers participated in the meeting.

Alleged land grabbing
by cops

IG Memon on Wednesday constituted a four-member committee to resolve the complaint of the Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD) against police officials involved in land grabbing.

ABAD, on March 9, had written a letter to the Sindh police chief to register a complaint against six officials of Karachi police involved in land grabbing and corruption.

As per ABAD, Sohrab Goth DSP Sohail Faiz, Mauripur police station SHO Ghulam Hussain Korai, Manghopir SHO Sarfaraz Awan, Sachal SHO Raja Tanvir, Surjani SHO Yasin Gujjar and Muaripur police station ASI Abdul Aziz were allegedly involved encroachment on ABAD members’ lands.

AIG Special Branch Khadim Hussain Rind will head the committee comprising CIA DIG, Driving Licence Branch DIG and Rapid Response Force SSP.
