1,000 criminal dens operating with impunity

KARACHI: There are over 1,000 criminal dens operating freely in different parts of the city and law enforcement agencies have clearly failed to control them.

An official at the police department told this correspondent that Karachi Police has issued a report detailing 1,000 criminal dens used for drugs, gambling and other activities, operating in Karachi’s south, east and west zones.

Such areas include Korangi , Lyari, Nazimabad, Jamshed Town, Bin Qasim Town, Mobina Town , Liaquatabad, Hockey Stadium, Clifton and their surrounding areas.

The report has been forwarded to all police stations so that they can take action against the owners of these dens, officials said.

A prominent police official, on condition of anonymity, said that these gangsters have complete control over people’s lives while the police appear helpless as they are fewer in number, have a shortage of technical equipment and are under political pressure.

It was also reported that, besides operating the dens, these gangsters are also receiving extortion money from traders, builders and even vendors.

All police stations have registered criminal records to identify criminals yet the police have failed to arrest them, the official added. Several clashes between rival groups have taken place in different parts of the city, including Dalmia, Shanti Nagar, Lyari, Korangi and Mawach Goth in the recent past and the police have so far been unable to arrest the leaders of these groups.
