Energy policy bans traditional fans

The policy promotes efficient machines to save power

The federal government on Wednesday decided to ban the production and sale of traditional fans from July 1, 2023 onwards, in order to save energy on the recommendations of the science and technology ministry.

The ban has been imposed as part of the National Energy Conservation Policy, for which the official Statutory Regulatory Orders (SRO) will soon be issued.

The National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA) has been tasked to allow the production of only those fans which require less than 80 watts.

The Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) was also directed to amend the national standard of fans in the country.

According to the decision, the fans falling in the first level of star rating category, consuming less than 80 watts of power, will be allowed to be produced and sold in the country.

Fans with AC inverters fall in the same category and consume around 45 to 50 watts of energy.

For the production of energy efficient fans, the association representing fan manufacturing industry in Pakistan will be consulted so that their production can be upgraded like that of energy saver bulbs' industries.

Keeping affordability in mind, a proposal is also being considered to provide energy efficient fans on installments to the public to ensure that every household uses one of them.
