Emma Mackey will not be returning back in season five of the Netflix original series Sex Education. Deadline reported that Mackey, who plays Maeve Wiley in the show, is set to exit from the British comedy-drama after four seasons.
The actor was asked about her return to the series in the next season. Responding to the question, the British-French star told RadioTimes at the BAFTA awards, “Season five? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week!” She added: “No, I don’t think I’ll be in season five. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”
Ahead of filming season four, the actor revealed that her character would be less crucial in the upcoming season, as she will be taking a step back. “It feels very familiar! And it’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So, there’s… I’m not in it as consistently.”
She also revealed her excitement to be back on the set. The BAFTA award winner said, “But we’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back. And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen—because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun!”
Multiple actors are exiting the series this season, including Tanya Reynolds, Patricia Alliso, Simone Ashley and Rakhee Thakrar. Adding to the list, earlier, Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the role of Eric Effiong, hinted about leaving it too.
The Doctor Who actor shared a picture of the door of his trailer with his character Eric’s name written on it on Instagram, with the caption, “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength.” Mackey and Gatwa also star together in the upcoming Barbie movie.
