Five-member committee formed to probe Karachi terror attack

Committee tasked with identifying handlers, facilitators of terrorists who attacked the Karachi police office

Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Memon constituted a five-member committee on Saturday to probe the attack on the Karachi Police Office (KPO) on Friday evening, Express News reported.

The committee—headed by DIG CTD Zulfiqar Larak—comprises of DIG South, DIG CIA, SSP Tariq Nawaz and In-Charge CTD Umar Khattab.

The committee has been tasked with identifying the handlers and facilitators of the terrorists.

Meanwhile, Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odhu presided over a meeting regarding the terrorist incidents during which officers of the law enforcement agencies were also present.

The participants of the meeting were informed that weapons, grenades and suicide jackets were recovered from the possession of the terrorists.

In the meeting, the footage from the CCTV cameras installed in the KPO was also reviewed.

'Additional IG was the target'

DIG South Irfan Baloch has claimed that the terrorists were targeting the Karachi Additional IG, noting that they had known which floor his office was on.

According to the Karachi police, the terrorists had been planning the attack for a month and had visited the police office before. "The terrorists continued to gather information for a month. They had come to the office of Additional IG Karachi," said DIG Baloch

He further said that the attack was carried out after the terrorists completed their surveillance. "The terrorists came in a vehicle from Saddar," he added.

Khattab confirmed that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was involved in the KPO attack.

"The terrorists have been identified and the vehicle in which they came is being investigated," he said, adding that progress is being made to trace of the facilitators of the terrorists.

Security forces have identified two of the terrorists involved in the attack. Of the three militants killed in the retaliatory action by the security forces, two terrorists hailed from Lakki Marwat and North Waziristan in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) province.

The police office building reportedly suffered significant damage during the attack. Many walls a pockmarked with bullets while windows and doors have been destroyed.

A suicide bomber had detonated himself on the stairs adjacent to the elevator in front of the Karachi police chief's office, causing severe damage to the office on the fourth floor.

The Karachi police also shared a video of the attack, showing DIG East Muqadas Haider and his gunman Taimur fighting off the terrorists.
