ISLAMABAD:

Annoyed by frequent strikes by lawyers, Supreme Court judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa on Monday remarked that the licences of protesting lawyers should be revoked.

Justice Isa made the remarks while hearing a case related to gas theft worth over Rs67 million against a local industry. A division bench of the apex court led by Justice Isa heard the case.

Justice Isa expressed his displeasure over the absence of counsels as the trial court’s order stated that the lawyers did not appear before the court two to three times because of strikes.

The judge questioned how the lawyers could go on strikes, adding that the licences of such counsels should be revoked, and noted that this code of conduct had been devised by the lawyers themselves which they did not follow.

“Everyone goes on strike on their own. Such judicial system should be closed down.”

Justice Isa said that the entire system had been corrupted in this manner.

He said that those judges should also be removed who write on the orders that the lawyers were on strike.

He said the entire system of Pakistan ran on a technicality, adding that the courts functioned according to Constitution and law.

He went on to say that the country’s system could improve if everyone performed their job.

Justice Isa said that the code of conduct was not made by the judges or the parliament but by the lawyers themselves.

“We follow the Constitution and law in the court but justice is done by the Allah Almighty,” he added.

The industry’s counsel maintained that his client should not suffer because of the lawyer’s fault.

The court dismissed the appeal filed by the industry.
