KARACHI:

A suspected thief jumped off the third floor of a building near the Jubilee Cloth Market in Ranchore Line to escape a mob on Monday.

Bystanders captured the video of 27-year-old Muhammad Zohaib jumping from the terrace with electrical wires breaking his fall. The injured suspect was then attacked by a mob before police intervened.

Zohaib had sought refuge in the building after a botched robbery attempt. He had stolen the motorcycle, owned by area resident Rizwan Arif Khan. While trying to escape with the motorcycle, he slipped and fell. After that, Zohaib tried to escape on foot.

He entered the building to escape the mob that was chasing him. Once he was surrounded, he went to the terrace on the third floor and jumped. The injured suspect was then beaten by the mob until a police mobile from the Nabi Bux police station arrived at the scene and took him into custody.

The Nabi Bux police registered a case against him under Section 381-A (theft of car or other motor vehicles) after recording the statement of the motorcycle owner.

Police added that the investigation would resume once the suspect received treatment for his injuries at the Civil Hospital.

They added that the initial investigation had revealed that the suspect was an addict who used hashish, methamphetamine and other drugs.
