Because of the way I dress: Uorfi Javed shares struggles of finding a home in Mumbai

Hindus won’t give her a place because she’s Muslim and Muslims have a problem with her wardrobe

It’s 2023 and people are still denied residential places based on their marital status, religion and profession. Indian actor Uorfi Javed recently shared that she continues to struggle to find a decent place on rent in Mumbai, one of India’s biggest cosmopolitan cities, because she’s “single, a Muslim and an actor.”

On Tuesday, Uorfi took to Twitter to reveal how difficult finding a home has become for her. Sharing that she isn’t trusted by Hindus or Muslims in the city, the Indian influencer said that the political threats she gets also makes landlords apprehensive of renting a room to her.

"Muslim owners don’t want to rent me a house because of the way I dress. Hindu owners don’t want to rent me [a place] because I’m Muslim. Some owners have an issue with the political threats I get. Finding a rental apartment in Mumbai is so tough,” she tweeted.

Sympathising with Uorfi, a social media user brought back a tweet from the actor from 2022 where she complained about the same. “It's literally every time man. Single, Muslim, actor – impossible to find a house,” she wrote, detailing all reasons why she has been denied a house for over a year.

Another user suggested that she should buy a house instead to avoid bickering with landlords. A tweep even joked that she should reach out to Shah Rukh Khan for a small space in his Mumbai residence, Mannat.

Uorfi has been a recipient of multiple political threats in the past primarily for the way she dresses. Last year, BJP leader Chitra Wagh had filed a police complaint against her objecting to the clothes she sports on the streets of Mumbai. She met the Maharashtra State Commission for Women chairperson and filed a complaint against Wagh for "criminal intimidation to cause harm" and also sought additional security due to such political threats.
