The election of Lahore Bar Association (LBA) emerged inconclusive as the legal fraternity seemed divided upon ‘rigging’ dispute.
Dispelling any chances of rigging, the Election Board chairman announced the results. Rana Intizar Hussain of Hamid Khan’s Professional Group secured presidential slot defeating Munir Hussain Bhatti fielded by the Friend's group led by Asma Jahangir.
After the results were announced, the lawyers resorted to aerial firing. The police officials deployed there silently slipped from the venue rather taking action against the violators.
Executive Committee Punjab Bar Council Chairman Rana Saifullah Khan, following complaints of unfair election, declared Babar Waheed as the acting LBA president.
A number of lawyers pointed out that Election Board Chairman Naveed Anayat Malik stopped polling at different polling booths after some irregularities were reported. On the other hand, Election Commission Chairman Naveed Anayat Malik said those who lost elections were complaining about ‘rigging’.
There were around 39 contestants vying for 10 seats. Total 6,271 lawyers exercised their right of vote during polling hours from 9am till 5pm. Some unpleasant incidents were also observed during the polling time.
The supporters carrying stickers shouted slogans in support of their candidates.
Rana Intizar was elected as president after securing 3,189 votes, Munir Hussain Bhatti obtained 2,168. On vice president’s slot, Nadeem Anjum secured 1,749 votes.
