The Parliamentary Leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the Sindh Assembly, Khurram Sher Zaman has proposed a separate police force for Karachi on the model of metropolitan police.
Zaman called Karachi police’s performance in effectively controlling rising street crimes, “disappointing”, which, according to him, necessitates a new force or a new policing model for the city, which should be separate from Sindh police.
The metropolitan police force should be raised on merit from among the residents of Karachi and it should be accountable to the city mayor under an independent police commission, he further proposed. “Karachi deserves a police force that operates with integrity, discipline and professionalism instead of the one plagued by incompetence, corruption and political influence,” he added.
Zaman pointed out that currently, Karachi’s policing model was reactive rather than preventive, which was the norm for most police forces around the world.
