KARACHI:

The Sindh government has decided to launch electric taxi services for the citizens of Karachi, including pink-coloured taxis driven by women for female passengers.

"The government is going to start electricical vehicle (EV) taxi services in Karachi. We have pricipally agreed to start this taxi service under the Sindh Mass Transit Authority," Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon told reporters in Karachi on Tuesday.

He said that the service would be started in two phases comprising of blue and pink-coloured taxis.

"We will start with the pink taxi service, which would only be for women passengers in Karachi. The drivers of the pink taxis will also be women," he said.

He said the pink taxis would be equipped with cameras and a monitoring system to ensure safety and security of the passengers and drivers.

He further stated that the electric taxi services would be a more safer, more affordable, and comfortable for the citizens of the metropolis as compared to regular taxi and ride-hailing services.

The Sindh Information and Transport Minister further said that the government would connect the recently opened Orange Bus Rapid Transit Service (BRTS) with the Green Line BRTS so that it becomes a financially viable mass transit service.

Memon said the government's initiatives were being made to upgrade public transportation options in Karachi and other major areas of the province. He predicted that the public would soon see revolutionary changes in the provincial capital.
