Irrespective of what the Chinese zodiac calendar says, it’s Ryan Murphy’s year and fans of the Dahmer — Monster and The Watcher director have much to celebrate.
The haunting tale of The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and the eerie and twisted Watcher are both returning for another round (or two) after the raging success of the shows’ initial runs. Monster, starring Evan Peters as the notorious serial killer, has been renewed for two more installments and will now become an anthology series that will follow other notorious figures who left their mark on society, as per Netflix.
The Watcher, on the other hand, will return for a second season. The story is loosely based on the 2018 New York article The Cut by Reeves Wiedeman. To date, The Watcher is the 12th Netflix original produced by Murphy.
In an official statement shared by the Collider, head of Global TV at Netflix Bela Bajaria celebrated the success of both series and praised the creators’ work: “Audiences can’t take their eyes off the Monster and The Watcher. The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, on Monster, along with Eric Newman, on The Watcher, are masterful storytellers [who’ve] captivated audiences all over the world. The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan’s distinct, original voice which created cultural sensations.”
Monster Season 1 is Netflix’s second-most-popular English TV season. It is also on its way to garnering 1 billion viewing hours in the coming weeks. The Watcher focuses on Nora (executive producer Naomi Watts) and Dean Brannock (Bobby Cannavale), parents of two who think they’re moving into an idyllic home in suburban New Jersey. But the family begins receiving menacing letters — and strange neighbourly attention — turning their dream house into a nightmare.
Monster Season 1 and The Watcher Season 1 are currently available to stream on Netflix.
