Prisons chief delegates remission powers

IG hopeful move will streamline, expedite remission process

LAHORE:

The newly appointed Punjab Prisons chief Malik Mubashar Ahmad Khan has delegated his powers to Regional Deputy Inspectors General for prompting award of remission to all eligible convicts across the province.

The IG, while chairing a meeting said the education remission cases were sent to the Inspectorate General, which he added was a cumbersome procedure and lawful remission was delayed inordinately.

In order to streamline and expedite the process, now Regional DIGs have been empowered to exercise grant of education remission power through a six-member committee comprising Superintendents Central and District Jails, Deputy Superintendent Jails (Education and Judicial), religious teacher and one or more co-opted members.

He said committees chaired by Regional DIGs will meet during first week of every month to scrutinise the cases submitted by the Superintendent Jail and recommend the award of education remission under amended rule 215 of Pakistan Prisons Rule 1978.

He said superintendents of each jail was required to furnish complete case to concerned DIG and proper accounting system would be prepared and maintained on the analogy of the inspectorate which he added will be checked during inspection.
