KARACHI:

An inquiry has been initiated against a senior police officer accused of receiving bribe and giving a clean chit to an absconder named in a kidnapping case.

According to an official notification, AIG Tanveer Alam Odho has been assigned to conduct an inquiry against SP Investigation Central Shehla Qureshi and submit a report to the provincial police chief. AIG Odho said that he would record statements of parties involved to get to the bottom of the matter.

The complainant, Ghulam Farooq Mehar, said that a man, named Rana Irshad, was abducted from the Civil Lines area, and six suspects were named in the FIR. However, SP Shehla gave them a clean chit in connivance with the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case, Inspector Sarfraz Khawaja, alleged Farooq Mehar. They moved the court against the decision.

Mehar further alleged that a few days earlier, Inspector Khawaja, along with a police party, had also abducted a farmer, named Ali Jan, from Sukkur. A case was subsequently registered at a Sukkur police station against Inspector Khawaja and other members of the police party.

According to Mehar, the court summoned the IG Police Sindh in the latest case who then ordered an inquiry against SP Shehla.

On her part, SP Shehla claimed that a vilification campaign has been launched against her on social media. She further claimed that it was a case of land dispute between two parties within the precincts of Preedy police station. It has also claimed one life.

Inspector Khawaja of the Preedy police station is currently deputed at Central Investigation.

SP Shehla claimed that letters have been sent to the IG Police Sindh as well as AIG Karachi stating that she has nothing to do with this case.
