KARACHI:

Kamran Tessori of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was sworn in as the Sindh governor on Monday, two days after President Arif Alvi appointed him for the post.

Chief Justice of Sindh High Court Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh administered the oath to Tessori at a ceremony attended by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, provincial ministers, diplomats and leaders of incumbent federal government’s coalition partner, MQM that nominated him to the office.

After he was sworn in, Tessori pledged to work for the betterment of Sindh, serving its people and raising its cases at relevant forums.

The office of Sindh governor was lying vacant for the last six months. The previous governor, Imran Ismail of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had resigned in April, following the removal of then prime minister Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion in parliament.

Since then, Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, who was under house arrest by the National Accountability Bureau in graft cases, had been performing as the acting governor of the province.

Soon after the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) formed the government, it promised to give the post of Sindh’s governor to the MQM. The party had nominated its senior leader Nasreen Jalil for the post. However, after her nomination, there was hue and cry on social media against here, which led to the delay in the appointment.

Tessori, who was born in a business family in 1974 first time came into prominence during Gen Parvez Musharraf’s tenure and joined the then chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim’s team as his close aide. Later, both developed the serious difference over he joined Pakistan Muslim League-Functional led by Pir Pagara.

After that he joined the MQM. However, “There were serious differences in the MQM ranks over the appointment of Tessori as Rabita Committee members. Dr Farooq Sattar used to defend him every time,” an MQM source said.

Tessori parted ways with the MQM-P in 2018 but re-joined it a while back as deputy convenor. Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui now recommended his for the post of governor.
