Activision-Blizzard's flagship game franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, will require the company's controversial SMS Protect System and will require players to link their post-paid number to the Battle.net account.

The announcement was made on the Support page after a controversy revolving around Blizzard's SMS Protect system, which has already been implemented in the new Overwatch 2 game.

However, since the launch of the game, players have faced various issues compelling Blizzard to scale back the requirement for SMS protection.

Some players with service from mobile providers were unable to play the game.

It is unclear if the new Warzone 2.0, launching November 16, will also require mobile phone number verification to play the game.
