KARACHI:

Pakistan Customs confiscated a large shipment of 55,000 smuggled tyres. Collector of Customs Usman Bajwa stated this on Tuesday during a press conference at the Customs House, Karachi.

He said we received reports that smuggling of automobile tyres is being done in a very organised manner in Karachi. Additionally, the tyre numbers are also tampered. The manufacturing date of old tyres is also tampered to increase the usable life. He stated that tampered and dull tyres are dangerous as they may burst and cause fatal accidents.

The customs authorities confiscated a large shipment of foreign tyres from a warehouse in the Mauripur area on a tip off. He added that the recovered tyres were used in dumpers, cars, buses and other vehicles.

The shipments were smuggled through the Afghan Transit Trade and different routes, and one person was also arrested. He said the factory served as a warehouse, and its owner had rented it out.
