Shireen challenges sedition law in IHC
PTI leader and former federal minister Shireen Mazari has challenged section 124A of the Pakistan Penal Code, pertaining to the offence of sedition, in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah will hear the plea on Friday (today).
The petition filed through Barrister Abuzar Salman Khan Niazi made the IGPs of the four provinces including Islamabad and the chief secretary respondent in the case and adopted the stance that section 124A was being used to suppress the freedom of expression.
It further said that section 124A was contrary to the fundamental rights given in the Constitution, adding that sedition cases were constituted to suppress criticism and freedom of expression.
The petition also requested the court to stop the registration of sedition cases and issue stay order on them.
While talking to media Shireen said they had not filed sedition case against anyone. She said the PTI chairman got the journalists who were arrested released immediately.
