Indian singer Anuv Jain is a growing sensation amongst indie music lovers in his country, Pakistan, and beyond. With eight songs under his belt and a rapidly growing fanbase, the 27-year-old musician was overwhelmed at the love his ninth single Mazaak received when it was released on Friday— especially from his female fan base who he claims loves him more than their own partners.
However, his latest single reveals that Jain isn’t single anymore. Mazaak, based on an unexpected beautiful love, is undoubtedly a fan favourite since the track recorded double the number of listeners than any other song of Jain, and it means all the world to him especially since the love he speaks about is his own.
In conversation with Hindustan Times, the Baarishein crooner said, “All of my songs have a story behind them, and they are all my stories. Mazaak talks about love. The kind of where when you least expect to fall in love, it just hits you like a truck. It’s based on a personal experience, but maybe it's too soon to share right now.”
Speaking about a viral parody video that implied his voice causes breakups, he said, “This is actually very funny. My mom and I watched that video together. We were laughing and watched it like ten times. But honestly, it's just an exaggeration.” Jain believes his songs have brought people together rather than causing a rift. “When my song comes out, people share it with their partners, and people have literally made friends over my songs. That just builds a sense of community, rather than breaking up because I have female fans who love me more than their boyfriends,” he said.
Moving on to crazy fan encounters, the Riha hitmaker said he often has unexpected visitors outside his house—and there’s been some scary stalking on the roads too. “I have a lot of people who turn up at my house every few days; this is a little scary honestly. I would like people not to do that.” He added, “One day I was coming back home, I was driving my car. There were a bunch of guys in a car next to me. They saw me and asked me to roll my windows down and went like ‘dude are you Anuv Jain?’ I was like ‘yeah.’ I thanked them and started moving. But, these guys kept following me. That’s when my driving skills came to play and came out of that. “
Jain usually posts pictures with his sister Anigha Jain on his Instagram and people have often mistaken her for his girlfriend. Reacting to it, he doesn’t seem to mind it and likes to be mysterious that way. “There will always be new people following you who don’t know about you. It's normal. It's fine. You can’t get context every time. People who follow me and my music know my story but how many times can you tell the same story?” he said.
Social media users have compared Mazaak to his 2021 hit song Gul but the singer disagrees. “I am not entirely sure about the similarities because Gul was actually a song about moving on. Mazaak is about falling in love. It’s not exactly related but if people want to interpret it that way then it’s up to them.”
Another comparison that his fans often make is of his writing style to that of Indian singer Prateek Kuhad–and this one he partially agrees with. “Honestly, the comparison is very flattering; Prateek is an amazing musician, absolutely brilliant. But at the same time, I completely understand that we are two very different musicians. The thing is that I understand comparisons, but I think they [fans] should understand that our stories are different. I don’t think the comparison is valid but it's fine, I will take it. I don’t really have a problem.”
Contemporary music has seen a rise in indie artists and their fashion is usually eccentric and bold. However, Jain doesn’t fall in that and is usually seen in a casual t-shirt and comfortable shorts. “I’m actually very confused about fashion. I recently asked a friend ‘I don’t look like somebody who performs in front of 1000s of people. Shouldn't I be a little jazzed up?’ I wear anything that I have. I don’t shop very often, I find it very wasteful.” However, there is room for experimentation except for a “flashy like a diamond-studded jacket.”
Jain rose to fame with songs like Baarishein, Gul, Riha, Ocean and Alag Asmaan. His calming music is often the background score for viral reels and TikToks.
