Austin assures support in flood relief

US defence secretary discusses rains aftermath in telephone call to COAS

US Defence Secretary Lloyd James Austin and offered full support to the people of Pakistan in the wake of unprecedented floods in a telephone call to Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Friday.

The phone call came as US Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power called on the army chief and discussed with him the bilateral cooperation and partnership in humanitarian initiatives.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, General Bajwa and Defence Secretary General Austin had a telephonic conversation in which matters of mutual interests, regional stability as well as defence and security cooperation were discussed.

The defence secretary expressed his grief over the devastation caused by unprecedented floods in Pakistan and offered sincere condolence to the families of the victims. He offered full support to the people of Pakistan, it said.

He also appreciated Pakistan Army’s rescue and relief efforts in areas hit by flooding and pledged to play his role enhancing cooperation with Pakistan at all levels, the media wing of the military added.

During the meeting between the army chief and the USAID administrator, matters of mutual interest and collaboration/partnership in humanitarian measures were discussed,” the ISPR said in a separate statement.

She offered full support to the people of Pakistan. The COAS thanked for USA’s support and reiterated that assistance from “our global partners shall be vital” in the rescue and rehabilitation of the flood-affected victims.
