The Queen’s Baton for the Commonwealth Games New Delhi 2010 has been handed over to host country India after its tour of Pakistan.

The baton, which carries the message of “Peace to Sports” from Pakistan, was handed over to the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi in a ceremony at the Wagah-Attari border amid high security.

A two-kilometre relay by 16 medallists was performed which was headed by the gold-medal winning wrestler Akhtar Pahlawon and ended with the Pakistan Olympics Association President Arif Hasan who handed the torch to his Indian counterpart Kalmadi. Commonwealth Games Federation Chief Mike Fennell was also present at the ceremony.

The border wore a colourful and festive look with thousands of spectators on either side in a ceremony featuring singers from both countries.

The baton will travel across India before reaching New Delhi during the Games’ opening ceremony on October 3.
