Singer breaks silence on ‘abusive’ 13-year-long conservatorship

Singer Britney Spears has opened up about her conservatorship in an audio message released via YouTube. According to Variety, the singer had initially shared the audio clip herself but deleted it soon after. The 22-minute video was immediately uploaded online by her followers. The clip hears Britney dropping some bombshell claims against her family, revealing gross details that she had kept to herself all this while.

The video features only her audio. A link of the video was initially shared on Britney’s official Twitter handle too. Since after deactivating her Instagram, Britney has remained active on the micro-blogging site. “I woke up this morning and realised there’s a lot going on in my head that I haven’t shared with anyone,” she said in the clip.

The Toxic hitmaker, who recently collaborated with Elton John for Hold Me Closer – marking her musical comeback after a 13-year-long conservatorship – revealed she had been offered multiple platforms, including an interview with Oprah Winfrey, to tell her story. But she chose to speak directly to her followers. “I’ve had tons of opportunities… but I’m here to open myself to others and shed a light on it. I get nothing out of sharing this… I have offers [for] lots and lots of money… to me, it’s beyond a sit-down, proper interview.”

Britney confessed that she’s been skeptical about sharing her side of the story out of fear of being judged, but certain speculations have left her with no other choice. “Honestly to this day, I don’t know really what I did. But the punishment of my father, I wasn’t able to see anyone or say anything…none of it made sense to me,” she recalled. Britney’s father Jamie Spears remained her conservator for the 13-year court-ordered arrangement. The conservatorship was terminated last November.

Going back in time to when the conservatorship began, Britney reminisced being a 25-year-old who couldn’t meet her friends when they called or texted because of her father. She added that she clearly remembers her dad being the controlling one because he loved to control everything she did.

Britney recalled imitating a British accent to get a doctor to prescribe her medicine, only to be met with a SWAT team at her doorstep with three helicopters three days later, none of which made any sense. When Britney asked her mother why so many people had suddenly dropped by, including a lawyer, she instantly spotted paparazzi outside her that continued to multiply. “There were over 200 paparazzi outside my house, video taping me through a window of an ambulance holding me down on a gurney,” she informed.

Recollecting how both her parents were involved in making agreements for her to be “pre-meditated,” Britney alleged that a woman had introduced the idea to her mother and father initially. “It was all basically set up. There were no drugs in my system. No alcohol. No nothing. It was pure abuse and I haven’t even shared half of it.”

The Circus crooner said that a lot of what she mentioned has previously been made public in her court hearing, specifically when she claimed her father sent her to a facility, and forced her to work and go on tour, preventing her from doing regular things like driving or socialising. She also told the court she was monitored by people in her home who forced her to give blood and watched her bare naked. She said that that her phone was tapped so she was never comfortable with the idea of asking for help.

“I was told I was fat every day,” Britney maintained. “They made me feel like nothing, and I went along with it,” she added. “You also have to understand, it was like 15 years of touring and doing shows. And I’m 30 years old, living under my dad’s rules. And while all of this is going on, my mom’s witnessing this, my brother, my friends — they all go along with it.”

Britney also spoke about her mother and confessed being more furious at her than her father because she felt like she could’ve helped her get a lawyer but instead, she hid when reporters called to inquire about the singer.

“The whole thing that made it really confusing for me is these people are on the street fighting for me, but my sister and my mother aren’t doing anything. To me, it was like they secretly, honestly liked me being the bad one — like I was messed up, and they kind of just liked it that way. Otherwise, why weren’t they outside my doorstep, saying, ‘Baby girl, get in the car. Let’s go,’” Britney complained.

“How much effort and work and heart I put in to what I did when I did work, even down to the details of how many rhinestones are going to be in my costumes. I care so much. And they literally killed me,” she added. “They threw me away. That’s what I felt — I felt like my family threw me away.”

She continued, “I was performing for thousands of people at night in Vegas, the rush of being a performer, and after the joy, the respect, I was shaking over 40 people hands a night before a show, training weekly, three sessions a week, AA meetings, therapy sessions… I was a machine, not even human almost. It was insane how hard I worked."

“I think that’s the main thing that hurt me. I couldn’t process how my family went along with it for so long…their only response was, ‘We didn’t know,’” she lamented. The popstar’s parents have both denied any wrongdoing over the years, asserting that they love their daughter.

Talking about her recent release, Britney said, “I have an amazing song right now with one of the most brilliant men of our time, and I am so grateful. But if you are a weird, introvert oddball like me, who feels alone… and you needed to hear a story like this so you don’t feel alone, know this: My life has been far from easy and you’re not alone.”

Britney was put under conservatorship in 2008 by her father who acted as the sole conservator for 13 years. He was suspended last September. The singer went on to tie the knot with Sam Asghari in June.
