KARACHI:

A special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) rejected the request of an investigation officer for physical remand in the Gulshan-e-Maymar terrorism case against the leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly, Haleem Adil Sheikh.

During the hearing, Sheikh's counsel argued that his client is under arrest in Karachi. He said that the opposition leader is being implicated in cases built on political grounds.

The prosecutor told the court that the case against Adil Sheikh was registered at Gulshan-e-Maymar Police Station under the provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act for issuing death threats to the Assistant Director of Anti-Encroachment. In the same account, the investigation officer of the case sought physical remand of Sheikh.

The court remarked that what grounds the physical remand was required when the challan of the case has been submitted. The prosecutor was unable to provide a reasonable justification. The court rejected the officer's request for physical remand. Meanwhile, Sheikh filed his bail application on which the court issued notices to the government for Saturday [today].
