Spider-Man star Tom Holland is taking a break from social media after trolls and things about him online sent his mental health ‘surge’. The celebrity took to Instagram to post one last video before pausing to explain to fans why he hasn’t been active or posting on social media for some time.
Despite not knowing how long he’ll take a break, the Marvel star has been praised for being open and talking about his mental health. The talented actor began the video by admitting that he had already recorded it several times but could not properly film it.
Tom started his statement by revealing that he had tried to record the video multiple times but just could not get through it. "Hi guys, so I've been trying to make this do an hour now, and for someone that has spent the last 13, 14 years, however long I've been acting, I cannot seem to say what I need to say without 'umming' and 'arring' every five minutes. So, I'm going to try again,” he said. "So I have taken a break from social media for my mental health. I decided to take a step back and delete the app."
The 26-year-old actor shared his worries with fans in a video clip as he said, "I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming. I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online and ultimately it's very detrimental to my mental state." Tom said that reading things that have been said about him on Instagram and Twitter, or online, makes him “step up”. These can be trolls, social media users, comments and things online.
He admitted that the clip was a “short” return to the app. Therefore, it appears that the star has already decided to take a break but did so in private. As it was before this clip was shared on August 14, it was not announced publicly in previous posts.
He then proceeded to explain that the charity is an educational program featuring mental health conferences. It also helps young children and their mental health. Then Tom said, “There is a terrible stigma against mental health. I know asking for help and asking for help is not something we should be ashamed of but it is something easier said than done,” he commented.
Tom was praised for the video and for his talk about mental health. Justin Bieber responded with a red heart emoji and wrote, “I love you, man.” Footballer John Terry added three blue hearts. Influencer, YouTuber and TikTok star King Bach sent prayer hands and hearts. “Don’t worry, we understand but we will miss you too,” said one fan. The second wrote, “Please take all the time you need. The most important thing is your well-being."
Prior to his self-imposed ban on social media, Tom had been an active poster, frequently leaving comments on girlfriend Zendaya's posts. The couple was the subject of a pregnancy rumor that went viral in June, possibly cooling Holland's ardor for social media in the process. "See now, this is why I stay off Twitter," Zendaya posted in response to the debunked rumor. "Just making stuff up for no reason ... weekly."
