Movie: Darlings
This highly anticipated dark comedy is about revenge. The latest Indian movie to grace Netflix stars Alia Bhatt and Vija Varma. With six million views in the first three days, the story about domestic violence has had the highest global opening for a non-English Indian film on the streaming platform. The story is about a lower middle-class mother and daughter living in Mumbai who carries out revenge against her husband, who is an abusive drunk. Both Varma and Bhatt wow audiences in this gripping tale that is at times quirky while still grappling with the serious subject of domestic violence.
Tv Show: Never Have I Ever
The much-awaited season three of this Netflix comedy hit just hit the platform this Friday. The series, by comedian Mindy Kaling, follows the story of first-generation Indian-American teenager Devi, portrayed by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. In this latest season, Devi navigates her new relationship with Paxton as they officially become a couple. Unlike dozens of other American high school shows, what redeems this series is Kaling’s comedy chops and the very real (or as close to real as possible) portrayal of a diverse American high school. The comedy surprisingly also lends to a dialogue on subjects such as racism in post-9/11 America and even the internment of Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbour.
Book: The Sandman
With its latest adaptation to hit Netflix, now is the perfect time to go back and revisit the comic book written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. The story follows its main character, Dream, also known as Morpheus and other names, as he is captured and comes to learn the lesson that change is inevitable. What makes the story of this horror tale gripping is Gaiman’s blend of mythology and history within the DC Universe. The graphic novel was one of the first to ever make it on The New York Times Best Seller list.
