KARACHI:

Administration and municipal authorities have decided to initiate a joint action to ensure implementation of a ban on manufacturing, sale and use of polythene bags in Karachi.

The decision was taken by the Commissioner Karachi, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, Police and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation to prevent damage to the city's infrastructure due to polythene bags.

Sindh Chief Secretary Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput said that the factories manufacturing plastic bags in the province should be sealed.

He said this while presiding over a high-level meeting at the Sindh Secretariat on Wednesday. Administrator Murtaza Wahab, Home Secretary Saeed Ahmed Mangrijo, Commissioner Karachi Iqbal Memon, Additional IG Javed Alam Odho and all DCs participated in the meeting.

Wahab said, "the Sindh Assembly passed a bill to ban plastic bags in 2014.”

He further stated that KMC officers will raid various markets to ensure the implementation of the ban on plastic bags. Plastic bags are one of the reasons for the blockage of storm drains in Karachi.
