PESHAWAR:

Two policemen were killed and one was critically injured when unidentified miscreants ambushed a police mobile on the outskirts of Peshawar on Wednesday evening.

Police told The Express Tribune that the mobile van was on a routine patrol in the Mattani area which in the past was considered the main hub of militancy in the district.

“They were on patrol in the area when suddenly miscreants ambushed the vehicle. As a result constable Sher Akbar and Jan Ali died on the spot. The police patrol in-charge Nothia Khan was injured critically who has been shifted to hospital for treatment,” said an official of the local police station, adding that a large police contingent had been sent to the area for a door-to-door search operation and to chase the attackers.

The attackers, however, managed to escape unchallenged after committing the crime.

“The investigation team has also reached the spot to collect evidence. They have picked the empty cartridges used in the assault,” he said.

Attacks at policemen have increased in intensity since the fall of Kabul to Taliban last year. The swift takeover of Afghanistan not only provided TTP with the much-needed morale boost but also helped them regroup and concentrate fully their energies on cross-border infiltration.

ISIS-Khurasan has also regrouped in Afghanistan which is involved in attacks at police and a suicide attack at a Shia community mosque inside the walled city of Peshawar.

Terrorists have successfully staged attacks in not only the tribal districts but also in Peshawar, Kohat, Swabi, Nowehera, Mardan, Buner, DI Khan, Tank, Karak, Bannu and Lakki Marwat in recent past.
