Kachehri Chowk design altered

Official says work on mega project to be completed in two years

The design of Kachehri Chowk has been modified to make it more viable for traffic movement.

Now, instead of one, the project will have two flyovers and single underpasses. The remodelled   mega project will be given final approval by Punjab’s Planning and Development Department (PND) next week.

 The new design has been developed by the consultant National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK).

Now, traffic moving to Jhelum Road crossing from Marrir Chowk will have to pass through the flyover. While the traffic coming from Jhelum Road will have to go through the Eight Grade Route for Marrir Chowk and the traffic moving to Saddar from Jhelum Road will have to pass through the flyover and the traffic travelling to Saddar from the old airport and the traffic going to Jhelum Road and Marrir Chowk will have to pass through the underpasses.

Various slip roads will facilitate the passage of the traffic. Around 60 per cent of traffic will be single-free. The mega project will cost Rs4 billion.

It is the only busiest intersection in Rawalpindi for the VVIP movement. This is also the busiest intersection for being close to the GHQ.

According to data, more than 300,000 vehicles pass through this busiest road daily. This intersection remains busy with traffic from morning till late at night. Due to the VVIP movement, motorists, transports and citizens remain stuck in traffic.
