KARACHI:

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman served a legal notice to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over a false allegation against the party to delay the local bodies polls.

The legal notice mentioned that the ECP spokesperson claimed that the JI had written a letter to ECP and requested to postpone the local bodies' polls in Sindh.

The JI notice made it clear that the letter written by the JI in June and mentioned by the ECP spokesperson was clearly demanding the delay in by-elections in the National Assembly constituency to ensure smooth sailing of affairs in connection with local bodies polls in Sindh.

The legal notice issued to the ECP demanded the commission withdraw the misleading statement and tender an apology failing to which the ECP will have to face an Rs500 million defamation lawsuit. The notice also mentioned the JI's efforts for ensuring the occurrence of local bodies' elections in Sindh.
