KARACHI:

Police have arrested three men for aerial firing and torturing police officers on Lyari Expressway, near Garden Interchange.

According to police, a wedding convoy got on to Lyari Expressway from Hasan Square, where the toll staff told them that motorcycles are not allowed to travel on the expressway. But the wedding guests travelling in a Vigo and other vehicles forcibly crossed the tollbooth, police said.

The toll staff reported the incident to the police via radio. Police officer Malik Mustafa intercepted the wedding convoy and tried to explain to the grooms, their family, and guests that motorcycles are not allowed on the highway.

They did not listen and started becoming physical with the police. They tortured the police officer, snatched his official SMG rifle and opened fire, police said. As a result, four people, including two volunteers, were injured and an official police van was damaged.

The Garden police registered a case against the two grooms, Owais and Salman, their father Faiz Ahmed, and several other guests on the complaint of Inspector Syed Nauman on different charges, which include terrorism, rioting, and torturing a police officer.

The grooms live in Karnal Basti, near Old Vegetable Market. Police raided an address in the area and arrested three suspects, including Faiz Ahmed, Yasir, and Siraj. Raids are being conducted for other accused, including the two grooms, who are on the run. Police have also obtained CCTV footage from the crime scene.
