PESHAWAR:

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police on Monday installed star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi their ‘Goodwill Ambassador’, with the rank of honorary deputy superintendent of police (DSP), at a simple ceremony at the Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines.

Afridi, the mainstay of Pakistan’s cricket team’s pace attack, thanked the police department for the honour, and praised their efforts for maintaining the law and order despite the most difficult circumstances.

At the ceremony, K-P Chief Secretary Dr Shehzad Ahmed Bangash and Inspector General of Police Moazzam Jah Ansari pinned the badges of DSP on Afridi. Rising as honorary DSP, Afridi first saluted his parents and then the IG.

“It is an honour for me to become the Goodwill Ambassador of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police and wear the police uniform,” Afridi told the ceremony. “I assure the police of my all possible support and availability.”

Afridi said that the K-P police were the real heroes of the people because they were performing very difficult duties. “The sacrifices of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police are not hidden from anyone. I’m short of words to describe the police performance,” he added.

Addressing the function, K-P Chief Secretary Dr Bangash said that Afridi had made the country at the national and international levels. “The Pashtun belt is very fertile as the region has produced so many big names in sports,” he said.

Dr Bangash praises IG Ansari’s efforts for organising a unique and important ceremony. He also lauded the unmatched sacrifices of the K-P police in maintaining the law and order in the society.

Renowned Pashto poet, intellectual and writer Prof Dr Abasin Yousafzai, while expressing his views on the occasion, said that Afridi with his brilliant performance made the Pakistani flag fly high.

IG Ansari in his address said that K-P police had its roots among the people. He noted that people from the province had excelled in different sports, such as squash, hockey, cricket, volleyball and football.

The IG hailed Afridi’s appointment as the goodwill ambassador. He expressed the hope that Afridi would use his abilities to further improve the image of the police force. He assured that the police platform would available to Afridi all the time.

“Whenever the police launched a new initiative or a new app, Shaheen Shah Afridi will be at the forefront to improve the image of the police,” Ansari said. We need Shaheen Shah Afridi establish cordial relations with people,” he added.

A video film based on the performance of the K-P police was also screened at ceremony, which was attended by national cricket team superstar batsman Fakhr Zaman, Afridi’s father and brother, senior police officers, media representatives and others.
